“The USC has had a great impact on me, my students and other teachers at Hazel Grove Elementary School!
First of all, I know that students look forward to receiving books. For some of these kids, they are the only books they’ve ever owned. I have one kid in my class who had been stealing my books, that is until he realized that he’d be getting some of his own to keep from The USC. He always asks, “When are the books coming?” (USC has distributed more than 36,000 books to urban students)
In addition to the how the books are making an impact in my kids, I can’t even begin to tell you all the ways Fatir (USC Literacy Coordinator) influences my classroom! Teaching is extremely tough work yet she is like a breath of fresh air when she comes into the room each week. The kids look forward to working with her, and I look forward to seeing her work with them! She encourages me, prays for me, and tries very hard to adapt to my classroom rules and dynamics. Having someone like Fatir in the room really helps. I have also seen the shock on the faces of several un-churched teachers when they realize that The USC is a Christian organization. I’m not sure what people expect, but having volunteers in the school doing the work, and giving back to our kids, is a huge witness.
