The Urban Scholastic Center (USC) is an urban based ministry and non-profit organization with the goal of producing socially-responsible Christian leaders. The USC serves K-12 students in the Wyandotte County and Kansas City, KS metropolitan areas and utilizes a  holistic development approach to connect students to Jesus Christ, improve their academic performance, enhance their leadership skills and equip them to become leaders in ministry, the community, and the world.

Current Positions at the Urban Scholastic Center

PRIMARY LEVEL PROGRAMS COORDINATOR

Position Type: Full Time (40+ hrs per week)
Reports to: Associate Director of the Urban Scholastic Center
Primary Role – Life Enrichment I & Soul Food I Coordinator
Secondary Role-  Supervise Literary Program

Program Descriptions: 

Life Enrichment I: Life Enrichment is a holistic after school discipleship and leadership development program for elementary school age students that meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:00pm to 6:00pm and Wednesdays from 12:30pm to 5pm. Mentors engage with students and work with them to complete Bible studies, community service projects leadership/character development and other learning activities. Students also visit college campuses and a variety of other organizations throughout the year.

Soul Food l: Soul Food I is a program for K-5th  grade held on Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 8:00pm. Mentors engage with students by playing games and sharing a meal with them. Students then come together for praise and worship and break into small groups for Bible study.

 Literacy Program Description: The literacy programs places books in the hands of students in the urban core of Wyandotte county. Our mission is to create programs and activities that encourage a love for reading and increase literacy in our community.

Primary Level Programs Coordinator Responsibilities:

  • Develop a strategic plan for Life Enrichment I & Soul Food I programming
  • Design, implement, and instruct curriculum for life enrichment I and Soul Food I programming that promotes students spiritual, physical, and intellectual development.
  • Provide in school mentoring in Life Enrichment II partner schools.
  • Train and supervise staff, volunteers, and interns associated with the Life Enrichment I and Soul Food I programs.
  • Facilitate a holistic approach to the development of USC students including the intentional engagement and development of programs for parents and other USC Student stakeholders.
  • Partner with community organizations to provide enrichment and cultural identity activities.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date student, staff and after school program records and provide periodic reports on the upper level programs
  • Collaborate with the communications director to develop a recruitment plan for students for the USC primary level programs. As well as ensure maximum exposure for USC Upper Level Programs
  • Prepare and administer budgets for each primary level program and ensure that all activities are managed within the budget.
  • Prepare instructional objectives and lesson plans.
  • Ensure periodic and annual program evaluation including feedback from students, parents, and other stakeholders.
  • Assist with shared USC events (fundraisers, summer enrichment, summer outreach, etc.)
  • Lead students in prayer, devotion & Bible study
  • Mentor students as needed (individual assessment is critical)
  • Drive USC vehicles to pick-up students from school (when needed)
  • Ensure preparation of snacks for students
  • Lead exercise with the students
  • Supervise literary program
  • Other related duties as assigned

  • Work with the Literacy Liaison’s (LL’s) from USC’s partnering churches and/or organizations to coordinate the collection, organization and delivery of new and gently used children’s books to USC.
  • Organize book delivery dates for the schools that are connected to our Literacy Program
  • Track and monitor the number of books that are delivered to each school, and provide periodic reports of book dissemination.
  • Organize and establish book-drive and book-packing dates.
  • Partner with community partners to organize groups/teams to sort books on a monthly basis.
  • Design and implement a reading program where mentors enter the schools to read with the students.
  • Act as the liaison between schools and the USC to determine how USC can help meet the literary needs of partner schools.

Beautiful Feet Program Description: The Beautiful Feet Ministry provides athletic shoes and sports equipment to under-resourced student-athletes to help more students get involved in school sports programs. The ministry also provides pre-game meals to student-athletes – this is our opportunity to share the Gospel and other Christ-centered messages.

Upper Level Program Coordinator Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the collection, distribution and tracking of athletic shoes and sports equipment to student-athletes. (Tracking: Record the names of coaches and students who receive shoes and equipment.)
  • Recruit individuals, businesses and/or small groups to provide (pay for and/or prepare) the pregame meals
  • Organize pre-game meals for Wyandotte High School and Sumner Academy sports teams.
  • Build relationships with the key individuals in Wyandotte High School and Sumner academy (coaches, administrators, staff, and students) by visiting and/or serving in those schools weekly. (In addition to starting a Beautiful Feet Bible Study in the schools)
  • Collaborate with the communications director to ensure maximum exposure for the Beautiful feet program.
  • Assist with shared USC events (fundraisers, summer enrichment, summer outreach, etc.)
  • Lead students in prayer, devotion & Bible study
  • Mentor students as needed (individual assessment is critical)
  • Drive USC vehicles to pick-up students from school (when needed)
  • Ensure preparation of snacks for students
  • Lead exercise with the students

COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR/DONOR RELATIONS

Job Summary

The Communications Director/Donor Relations position is responsible for the strategic design, positioning, marketing, and promotion of the Urban Scholastic Center and for the development of new donors and cultivation of relationships with existing donors.

Communications Director Responsibilities:

  • Strategic design of marketing campaigns for the USC
  • Creation of marketing materials, videos, newsletters, brochures, etc.
  • Designing and implementing a plan for the online presence of the USC. Including email campaigns and mass mailings.
  • Act as official photographer for all USC events and the Urban Market.
  • Design and monitor marketing budget for the USC
  • Maintain engaging USC website.
  • Ensure an engaging and consistent messaging in USC communication.
  • Research media coverage and industry trends.
  • Oversee all communication and marketing elements of the USC.

Donor Relations Responsibilities:

  • Develop a strategic plan for donor and stakeholder engagement and consistent communication.
  • Ensure that donors experience high-quality interactions that foster long-term engagement and investment.
  • Develop, monitor and maintain guidelines and procedures for acknowledgement, recognition and stewardship of all gifts
  • Develop new “Friends” of the USC through a variety of networking events and avenues
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to identify new prospective donor opportunities or events
  • Speak on behalf of the USC at various events, to deepen donor connection and commitment.
  • Develop relationships and giving programs that align donor passions with USC initiatives
  • Promote a culture of gratitude and high-quality customer service.
  • Design innovative donor events and initiatives.
  • Plan, coordinate and manage a wide range of donor cultivation and recognition events and opportunities to support the USC’s major and campaign gift strategies.
  • Assist in all donor engagement related activities.
